Amazing.
That’s all I can say about it, amazing. Of course I’m talking about the Tool concert that I went to. There were a few high points, a few low points, and a shit ton of fucking amazing things. So basically I’m going to run through everything that I remember about the concert. Enjoy!
Alright, so I got a ride from my mom, and I went with my friend, jesus. So we hopped out of the car a few blocks before we got to the target center, mainly because First Ave was packed, almost impossible to drive through. So we hopped out and walked down a few blocks.
We got there and there was a line, just to the doors, to get into the lobby area. So we got in line with all of the other, seemingly stupid, people. The reason I call them stupid, is that there were about 12 doors, and they were all going into 2 doors, we could have easily gone through the others. So it took us about 10 minutes to get into the lobby area.
Then we were in the lobby, with a huge crowd. We had to make it to the front, so we could get checked in, so on the right side of the crowd, some security guy said, “Down the hall, up the stairs, 6 doors!” So Jesus, and I went up the stairs, and were again stuck in a crowd, though it moved faster, I’d say it took like 5 minutes to get to the front.
Then we were patted down, told the rules, no moshing crowd surfing, bitch bitch bitch. I, of course, nodded then went on to get my ticket scanned. I walked up to the lady, and she scanned it. Then she looked at me and said “I’m sorry, you need to go to the box office, and get new tickets.” She said it soo bluntly, so I just stared at her for like 10 seconds, and said “WHAT!?” I was clearly pissed off. So then of course, I had to walk all the way back to where I had started.
So I walked up to the ticket sales box, and they told me that I had to go see guest services. So I went over to that box. I asked why we had to get new seats, and he said that they weren’t able to put out the seats, due to barricades that they had down on the floor. So I gave him a blank stare and I was like, “So where are we being moved?” Then he said that we are being “upgraded” to a suite.
Though we were “upgraded” I still think the seats we would have previously had would be much much much better. We would have been closer, but whateva’. So anyway, we went up to the suite, walked around in a giant circle for like 20 minutes and finally found ours. So we were in there for a while, and we watched Isis play, which is a fucking amazing band. They played like 4 songs, that was about 30 minutes long.
Then they wrapped up and some more people came into the suite, and we got up to get water, from the sink in the other room, and we got jacked. Some assholes took our seats. So then I was like “hey, that booth right there is empty, and it’s directly facing the stage, head on!” So then we went into suite 67. It was empty, and we just chilled while they were putting up the tool set.
Then we decided to go get some pizza, immediately after we left the room, people started cheering. The Tool-Navy forums say that it was some drunk guy who did something stupid, and got carried away. Then right as the slow cashier handed us our pizza we heard more cheering, so we basically ran back. We got there right as Maynard came on stage.
We were greeted with “Hello almost Canada!” and that was followed by some insane cheering. This was immediately followed by a synth intro, and then right on into a song. They played Stinkfist first, even though it’s not nearly my favorite song, it was amazing!! From here on out, it just got better and better.
Right after Stinkfist, they went into their now infamous song, The Pot. The Pot is a really fucking good song, once you get over the singing at the beginning, you realize that there is some really good music playing there. The bass was incredible, closely followed with guitar.
Right after that came Forty Six & 2. All I can say for that is WOW! Amazing bass all the way through, just sounded great live. Wish there were more recordings of it live, I liked it much better than the one on the album itself.
Then came Jambi. Jambi fucking shreds live, it was really sweet. Someone on a forum said that Danny, the drummer, broke one of his drum sticks while playing this. I wouldn’t doubt it, this is one of their good metal songs, at least the guitar, and drums make it sound heavier.
Following Jambi was Schism. If you’ve not heard tool a whole lot, I can almost guarantee you’ve heard this song. Schism is on the radios everywhere, and it’s a great song. Again the bass was fucking insane for this. But there was more to the song this time. They added a section, about half way through, it was really an insane drum solo. Danny Carey is THE best drummer right now, you can debate all you want, but this is a fact. The drum solo was godly.
A hard act to follow, but right after schism came, it was Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned, which are really one song. This was really fucking cool. Maynard came out with his little voice morpher dealy and started singing the beginning. Then it went on into the rest of the song, and it was just awesome. with about 2 minutes left, they took a 10 second break, and started playing again. Was rather cool.
Then the best songs of the night came. The best songs, by far were Wings of Marie, and 10,000 Days (wings pt. 2). I couldn’t believe that they were doing this. They just started doing these live maybe two weeks ago. I was really happy the way they did things. It started with a few gong beats, then in with string picking, or whatever the hell maynard had. From there it was the guitar that carried the first song, up until the middle where drums play a big part, then guitar/bass.
In the middle of Wings of Marie, they had some insane lighting. They had lasers that you could see perfectly, because all of the smoke they had. They were flat, and kept expanding, and spinning. They at times, were flat all across the arena, and you could make out clouds, it was really trippy. The lasers for this song, added the feeling to it, that it really needed.
Then with 10,000 Days, they had the same lighting effects most of the way through. Which was really cool, I wish I would have taken video of it, because it was just that damn cool. So they finished up that song, after dedicating it to Mike Vale. Was my favorite song(s) of the night, maybe so for others as well.
Following 10,000 Days, there was a few minutes of intermission. They went and sat on the platform that maynard had been standing on. If I’m correct, it was Justin Chancellor, who lit his lighter. The next thing I know, the entire arena was full of people with their lighter lit up. The whole place was lit up, and there was a huge encore. Was a really cool feeling.
Following that was Lateralus. Lateralus is one of their best songs, of all time. It’s long, and serves every element of music. It features each band member with a solo, at least once if not twice throughout the song. They did a great job making this back when the album was released, and they do an even better job playing it live.
Then came Vicarious. Vicarious was the first single of the 10,000 Days album, and it’s being played constantly through the airwaves of america. It’s a solid song, great fucking drums, great guitar, great bass, and the vocals are just unbelievable.
They ended with a bang. Maynard said something which I don’t recall, and then said “Peace.. The… Fuck.. Out!” Right when he said that Adam kicked in with the intro to Ænema. It really kicked ass. I used to be a big fan of this song, it was really the first tool song that I had ever heard. But eventually it was over played and such. But seeing it live, just breathes life into the song. Just the way it was sang, and the way the lights were, and energy that the crowd had for it was awesome. Was a great way to end it.
That’s what it was like to go to a tool concert. The next time they come, I’ll be going for sure. There’s no way to stop me. In the mean time PEACE THE FUCK OUT!
