Hacking Biphasic Sleep
So the other day, I was thinking about the way biphasic sleep works, and just thinking about it in general. I’ve been doing it for about a month now, and I can say that I’m a little less than satisfied with it. The only problem I have with it is when I have school, it is hard to sleep at the 90 minute intervals without waking up, and just going back to sleep. Not sure why, perhaps stress?
Anyway, I’ve come up with an idea that I think will work fairly well. The basic idea, is to wake up 100 minutes before your target wake up time, and then stay awake for 10 minutes. After this 10 minutes, go back to sleep! Then waking up 90 minutes later shouldn’t be a problem.
I haven’t yet been able to try this. I think I’ll try it in the next few days. If it doesn’t work right, then I’ll just have to think up another way to wake up well! I’m not even sure if this is still considered biphasic sleep, but if it works, I get to name it myself! So here’s a quicky list on what to do, in case you already forgot.
Jakephasic Sleep
- Schedule sleep, aim for 5-9 hours, seems to work best for me.
- Wake up 100 minutes before the target wake up time
- Stay awake for 10 minutes only
- Go back to sleep for 90 minutes
- If all goes well, you should wake up all ready to go!
Have fun, and if you get results, please comment!

Hey Jake,
I’ve been sleeping biphasically for three days now, and I just woke up from my third nap ever. Interestingly, I have no troubles waking up in the middle of intervals or when they’re done: rather, I can’t fall asleep! Perhaps it’s because I take a late nap (20-21:30) and go to sleep 1:30, but it’s really annoying that it takes me almost an hour to fall asleep. Was it like this when you started out, too? I hope it will change as I adapt, or I’ll have to settle for less sleep.
