Someone outta…

Well after some thinking today, I’ve decided that there is some pretty cool stuff, that someone outta do. Both small things and large alike. I think that many people could benefit from these things alike.

The first thing is a linux distrobution for designers. I was talking about this with a friend a while back, and it seems as if there would really be a limited market, for it, but it would be soo awesome if it was done right. I mean look at how Mac OS 10 turned out, it too is unix based. So just imagine a completely free version of Mac OS, with a better app, and all of the apps needed by designers and coders, pre installed.

This to me seems like a small thing at first, but when you really think about it, it could be huge. I mean just think of everyone who could be working on it, to make it better than apple’s OS, it would bring some major innovation. Everyone can copy Apple, but can they top them? I think if anyone is going to get close, it’s going to have to be open source, and it’s going to have to be driven by some major players in the design feild.

I’m not really sure if it would be best fit as a complete distro, maybe just a gui? Either way, think open source “Super Apple.”

Another idea I think someone should really do, and this is probably something I’ll be doing myself, is make an all out open source web stats app. There are tons of people who use Mint, and a ton of people who refuse to use mint and go on to use awstats. I actually use mint, it’s nice, I’m going to continue to use it, till something better comes along. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s nice, but it’s not really worth $30, and lets face it, awstats sucks!

So my goal, and I’ve talked to some people about it already, is to make an open source stats app, that tops them all, I don’t see a reason why it isn’t possible, considering that most suck, or are mediocre or even overpriced. It’ll be nice to see a whole community built around something like this, and everyone would be able to contribute. It’s just the way to go, in my opinion.

So basically I’m going to learn php, register a domain, and get to work on this. Of course it may take a couple of months for me to do what I say, but it’ll come eventually.

You want a Linux distribution for graphic designers? How about Grafpup Linux (http://www.grafpup.com/)?

I’ve only used analog for stats, haven’t tried awstats or mint yet, but I guess I’m not too much of a stats junkie. There’s probably better stuff to be found on freshmeat or whatever, but I’ve never been that motivated to research it.

I’ve never heard of Grafpup, but it’s not looking too intriguing to me. I visited the site, and there are no screenshots, and if I read right it includes basic KDE. I’m more of a gnome person myself, but what I was meaning about having our own distro, I was talking about creating a whole new view on linux. Make it 100% user friendly, more so than a mac, and make it more visually attractive than a mac. It’d be hard to do, but it can be done!

And as for stats, I’m just becoming a junkie. There really is no “OMG AWESOME GREAT!!!” stats app out there. Which is why I think there should be one.
